Interesting Facts

  • Awarded the Distinguised Flying Cross in 1943 for "unflagging zeal and devotion to duty" during detached air operations in Alaska in April 1942. Arriving at Kisku Island with the bombers at the target, S/L Boomer shot down a defending Japanese Zero aircraft. He then led a group of Kittyhawk planes in strafing submarines and enemy installations in the harbour. Damage from the attack pushed the total of Japanese ships sunk or damaged in the Aleutians to 33 since June 3rd.
