  • Born at Portage la prairie, MB. Attended PS and Collegiate and Vocational School at North Bay, Ont., where hw worked in a retail store. Hobbies, Hockey, Rugby, reading and fishing. Enl. July 1941. Trained Montreal, Toronto and Jarvis. overseas to NFLD Sep. 1942. Early morning 9 Dec 1942 two Castalina flying boats were detailed to escort the battleship Queen Elizabeth from new York Harbour. Dayton's plane crashed into sea from a low altitude breaking in two and killing six crew members. His body was recovered 36 hours later and returned home. His father had died in 1928 of wounds received during the First World War. Surv. mother Mrs. Rose Pearl Dayton, North Bay and by grandparents.
