  • Born at Douglas, NB. Educated at Fredericton High School and University of New Brunswick. Very active in Boy Scouts at Douglas. Enl. Moncton 21 Jun 1940. RAF 145 Sqn had recently switched from Hurricanes to Spitfires and was engaged in cross-channel sorties. Gilbert took off to search for the wreckage of a Spitfire that had crashed. The Air Ministery believed he had stalled and spun-in from low altitude at Shripney near Barnham, Sussex. Surv.
