Interesting Facts

  • Born in Paradise, NS., second son of Archibald and Maude Ethel Gillis. Elementary school at Paradise, High School at Lawrencetown and then Acadia University at Wolfville. Enl. Halifax on outbreak of war, 4 Sep 1939. Trained in Canada and posted to RCAF No. 11 (Bomber-Reconnaissance) Squadron (anti-submarine) at Dartmouth, NS. Flying as navigator as part of a five-man crew aboard Lockheed Hudson B14L-1785 engaged in a search for missing Bolingbroke (9007), all five men were lost when at 1140 hours during poor visibility the aircraft struck a radio tower on Sable Island.Unm. Surv. Family at Paradise, Annapolis County, NS. and older brother F/L Donald in RCAF. Plaque erected at Shearwater Aviation Museum.
