Interesting Facts

  • 'My Great grandfather's ship was stopped by a U Boat off of Africa in WWII. According to accounts from survivors they put the crew in lifeboats and sank the ship with deck guns. They pointed them towards Africa and off they went. The next day the U Boat surfaced near them and gave them water and told them to head further south as they were headed for Vichy French controlled Sierra Leonne. For some reason they didn't get far enough south and were captured by the Vichy French and put in a prison camp. My Great grandfather died of malaria and the day he died two other sailors tried to escape but were shot. We thought he might be buried in Sierra Leonne but in fact he was buried in Kindia, Guinea in North Africa. My Cousin Matthew Elliott found the picture on Facebook.'
