  • Sgt. George Amos Dunkelman of Midland, Ontario was listed as missing over Germany prior to being officially reported as killed in action on this day, 6 November 1944.
     
    When he was reported as killed in action, several newspapers disputed the facts around his enlistment and death.
     
    One newspaper stated that he was previously missing in action over Germany, and officially reported as killed in action on 6 November 1944, however they go on to say in the next paragraph that he enlisted in December of 1944. One month after being reported killed in action over Germany.
     
    Another newspaper stated that he was killed in action on 6 November 1944 over Holland.
     
    In fact, his Lancaster Bomber was shot down over Holland on 6 November 1944 killing his entire crew, and his Attestation Papers show him as enlisting in November of 1942.
     
    George Dunkelman was born on 19 November 1922 in Midland, Ontario Canada to father Louis of London, England, and mother Elizabeth (nee Oliver) of Scotland, UK.
     
    George lived in Midland, Ontario at the time of his enlistment and worked as a Fruit Clerk at a local business.
     
    He was promoted from Sergeant to Pilot Officer posthumously.
     
    Pilot Officer Dunkelman, along with the other members of his crew are buried at Heerde Cemetery in the Netherlands.
