A quotation by his chief stretcher-bearer, Company Sergeant-Major W. Gagne, Fus M-R, while descibing how the pair were driven on hands and knees by machine-gun fire towards some rocks that offered little cover: 'Capt Alleyne asked me how many stretcher-bearers he still had with him. As I was telling him there was only the two of us, he was hit by a bullet on the right side of the chest. He lay still on his stomach.... I took his pulse. He was dead. I left him there and crawled forward on the beach.'(Operation Jubilee Court of Enquiry.)
