  • Member of the 19 Field Regt. Son of Alberta Viola Wetherup of MacLeod, AB. Husband of Irene Joyce Wetherup.

     

    "On board LST-420, a LST Class 1 Tank Landing ship enroute to Ostend , Belgium from England, due to very bad weather the small convoy it was in was directed to return to England to avoid the risk of floundering and blocking the harbour. Off-shore, within sight of Ostend as the group headed back to England the ship struck a German mine and broke in two. The fuel in the 50 vehicles on board ignited and all but 32 perished. The sinking was the largest loss of life on a British landing craft during WW2. The official War Department records list Harold Chester Wetherup as killed by accident, as were many others who perished in the sinking. Harold had been a serving officer in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police before enlisting to serve in WW2."
