Nile Voyaguers

In March 1884, imperial entanglements left British General Charles Gordon stranded in Khartoum, Sudan. When British General Garnet Wolseley was ordered to rescue Gordon, he requested approximately 300 Canadian boatmen to accompany him on the expedition. Known as the "Nile Voyageurs," these men maneuvered wooden whaleboats that transported troops up the Nile to Khartoum. The Nile Expedition (September 14, 1884, to April 17, 1885) was the first international military mission in which Canadians participated.
