"Louis Daem also received the Military Medal. He was wounded outside of Valenciennes on November 2, 1918, and was medically evacuated to London, England. He had both of his legs amputated before he died from infection on December 9th, 1918, after the war had ended. Private Daem originally attested to the 121st Battalion in Vancouver on January 14, 1916. After training in British Columbia, he proceeded overseas in August 1916, and eventually joined the 102nd Battalion in January 1917. He was sick with the mumps during the fight at Vimy Ridge, but was involved in all other engagements through to the battle of Valenciennes, which turned out to be the last combat that the 102nd Battalion saw.
