According to fellow members of his unit, Private Matchett was killed in the trenches northeast of Boisleux-St.Marc, France when an enemy shell exploded near where he stood on sentry duty. His body was found by Lt Barry, who was sent out with a night patrol on April 21st in hopes of capturing a German. His body was covered with a blanket upon discovery. The records show that Pte Mattchett had arrived from the Reinforcements Camp only 12 days earlier.
