Born in Canada, Alberta. After the death of his father in a mining accident in 1918, his mother returned a widow to UK in 1919 with her two Canadian-born sons. Thereafter he was educated by (an eminent) naval family in either UK or Malta. He was commissioned into the Sherwood Foresters as a lieutenant in 1937 when he would have been approx. 20 years old.
