  • Herbert Tapson-Jones Captain, 3rd Royal Field Artillery Was born in Llandaff, Wales, in 1893. After completing his education he immigrated to Canada where he joined the staff of the Bank of Montreal. He enlisted in Calgary in August, 1914, as a Gunner in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery. After serving a year at the front he was given his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battery, Royal Field Artillery. He was mentioned in dispatches for conspicuous bravery in extinguishing a fire in an ammunition dump, caused by a direct hit from an enemy shell. For his work in covering with a detached gun the withdrawal of his battery during the enemy advance on the Chemin des Dames he was awarded the Military Cross. He was again mentioned in dispatches for distinguished conduct on September 24th, 1918. He was wounded on October 6th and he died from his wounds on November 12th, 1918.

    From The London Gazette, 24 Sept. 1918 (after receiving the Military Cross): Lt. Herbert Tapson Jones, B.F.A. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion toduty. This officer was in command of a detached gun during a withdrawal; he controlled and manoeuvred it with great skill several times within close range of, and fighting with open sights, the advancing enemy. By his coolness and initiative he caused the enemy many casualties.
