Son of William Henry and Emma Butler of Arden, Manitoba. Was a student at the University of Alberta until enlisting in the 5th Overseas Universities Co. at McGill University.
Sailed to England on SS Olympic on April 1, 1916. Assigned to Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and joined his unit in the field June 9, 1916 and on 7 September was transferred to the Canadian Overseas Railway Construction Corps to serve with his brother Albert Henry. Wounded September 15, 1916 in the Battle of the Somme. Invalided to England, recuperated and joined 2 Cadet Wing, Royal Flying Corps on 30 August, 1917. He trained at No. 2 School of Aeronautics at Denham before undertaking flying training at No. 10 Training Depot Station, Royal Air Force at East Harling.
He was killed in a flying accident on 2 August, 1918 when his aircraft stalled while in a turn. His name is found on two Memorials: one in Neepawa, Manitoba and the other in his hometown of Arden.
