On standdown, the Strathconas were lying about playing cards and reading. Near sunset 4 Troop A Sqn men began a mock rifle inspection with Scott humorously impewrsonating their troop officer, Lt.Ketchen. As Scott peered down the bore of the last man in the line, his close pal Tpr James Reed, Reed closeed the  bolt, feeding a round into the chamber and pulling the trigger. Scott died instantly. The popular Scott and his younger brother William had enlisted in Regina. The Regiment was devastated. Next Day The Coldstream Guards led them to the cemetery where Scott was buried with a firing party at his graveside. Regimental trumpeters played Last Post and Reveille. Reed was a shattered man and had to be kept under guard to keep him from doing himself harm. ÂÂÂ
