Revamped fencing surrounding the cenotaph at the Minnedosa Legion #138 in Minnedosa, MB was made possible with contributions from the NWORA Community Memorials Programme.
Minnedosa Tribune (November 4, 2022)
Over this last summer, the Minnedosa War Memorial, located on 1st Avenue SW, was given a refresh with the wrought iron fence being dismantled and sent out for sandblasting and powder coasting. On behalf of the Legion, Allan McManus and John Mendrikis took on the task of dismantling and erecting the refurbished fence to enhance the site. The Minnedosa Legion successfully applied for a grant from the National Wall of Remembrance Association. The total cost of the project is estimated at $5,700 and the grant received was for $4,200.
The Cairn at Legion Branch #631 was recently re-pointed and the surrounding walkway replaced, painted with a non-slip paint and white stone added to fill the concrete form spaces to ensure that the walkway is safe for all who wish to visit the Cairn. This project was made possible with contributions from the NWORA Community Memorials Programme.
Cyprus 2024 commemorates Canada’s contribution to the UN Force in Cyprus on the 60th anniversary of the mission, and the 50th anniversary of a forgotten war. For most Canadians, Cyprus was just a peacekeeping mission, unaware that their troops were caught in the middle of a war between two NATO allies. A pilgrimage of veterans and their families returned to Cyprus in Nov 2024, and the many untold stories of OP SNOWGOOSE and the events of 1974 were collected. We shall remember the 28 Canadians who died in Cyprus and the sacrifice of all who served there. Remembrance services were held in Cyprus and memorial plaques dedicated at Wolseley Barracks in Cyprus, Garrison Petawawa, and Perron-Berger Park, the Village at Griesbach.
Perron-Berger Park, the Village at Griesbach – Dedicated 4 June 2023
The Griesbach memorial was made possible by Canada Lands for funding the cairn and repair of the monuments, the City of Edmonton and Village of Griesbach for upkeep of the park, the National Wall of Remembrance Association for funding of the plaque, Behrends Group for the design of the plaque (and refurbishment of the Perron-Berger plaque that had been stolen and recovered), and the Airborne Social Club for standing vigil all these years. Special thanks to Captain (Ret’d) Bill Dickson for his leadership in making all this happen.

Garrison Petawawa – Dedicated 5 May 2024
With thanks to 2 CMBG HQ & Signal Squadron and 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment, this Cyprus dedication was combined with the annual Fallen Jumper Ceremony which honours the seven soldiers who died in 1968. It was a very meaningful day of Remembrance!
The plaque and stone were funded by the National Wall of Remembrance Association and designed by Campbell Monument. Special thanks to CWO (Ret’d) Ian Husk for his leadership in preparing the ceremony site, and to Museum Curator Ainsley Christensen and Collection Manager Seana Jones for mounting the Cyprus 2024 exhibit.
Padre Lt (N) Wendy Guguid, Pipe-Major Adam Tingskou, CWO (Ret’d) Mel Douglas, CWO (Retd) Frank Grattan, MGen (Ret’d) Walter Holmes, Maj (Retd) JP Hill, and Col (Ret’d) Jim Holsworth, contributed to this moving tribute to the sacrifice of peacekeepers and those who died 50 years ago.

Wolseley Barracks, Cyprus – Dedicated 11 November 2024
Four years of planning and collecting history culminated in a pilgrimage to Cyprus of Canadian Veterans and their family members, joined by British, Finnish and Swedish Veterans, serving Canadian and UN soldiers, Veterans Affairs official delegation, Embassy and Consulate officials, to commemorate 60 years of Canada’s contribution to UNFICYP.
With thanks to the British Sector 2 workshop, a protective cover and the Cyprus 2024 anniversary plaque were installed at the cairn site. The plaque, which honours Canadians who served in Cyprus since 1964, was unveiled as the last of three plaques funded by NWORA.

The mission of Operation Husky 2023 was to honour those who died on all sides during the Sicilian Campaign and to bring attention to the shared history of Canadians and Italians by engaging Canadian and Italian students in the study of the making of peace. 2023 marked the 80th anniversary of Operation Husky, the allied invasion of Sicily in World War II (WWII).
In July 2023, a small group of Canadian volunteers conducted a 325-km, 20-day march, from the beaches of Pachino to Adrano, and followed in the footsteps of the 25,000 Canadian soldiers who fought in Sicily during World War II. The march included battlefield history briefings and commemorative activities in 22 towns. Using the trail dedicated to this commemoration, the “Walk for Remembrance & Peace”, marchers followed a fully mapped and signed walking trail that followed the path taken by the 1st Canadian Infantry Division in the summer of 1943. Marchers, accompanied by Sicilian civilians and veterans planted more than 600 markers. Each marker honours one of the fallen near where they died and identifies the soldier, their rank and regiment (plaques are written in Italian). Daily ceremonies were held in each of the towns.
Thanks to contributions from the NWORA Community Memorials Programme, grave markers for thirty three (33) fallen Canadian soldiers were funded and placed by a member of the NWORA Board of Directors during this year’s 2023 commemorative event.
