Born in Bay city, Michigan, USA. Commissioned as a lieutenant and went overseas with the 162nd (Parry Sound) Bn CEF, "The Timber Wolves." Later volunteered and served in 57 Squadron, Royal Flying corps. In June 1917, after conversion from FE2d's to DH4s the squadron moved to the Ypres sector and started flying long-range recce, bombing and photography sorties, meeting strong opposition from enemy fighters but fighting many successful engagements. On one occasion the flying personnel became casualties within a few days. The unit stayed in action, however, flown by replacements.
