  • Born at Salmon River, NS., son of James Killer Eaton, a civil engineer. Local schools and Colchester Academy. Studied engineering and worked for the Newfoundland Rwy (1889-90).1893-95 involved in survey of Labrador Peninsula for Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). Militiaman since 1887, in 1892 joined Ottawa field Battery RCFA. Captain Shortly after leaving GSC on 20 Sep 1896, major, July 96. 7 Dec. 98 m. Myra FitzRandolph,Fredericton. Gazetted lieutenant in Permanent Force. Overseas to S. Africa in Jan 1900 as 2i/c D Bty RCFA. Served with Baden-Powell at Mafeking, Jun-Jul 1900. Captain Jul 1902.  Twice MiD. Ret. Canada Jan 1901,as major. Ret. S.A  as 2 i/c 3 CMR after Peace 31 May 1902. Selected by Lord Roberts as first colonial officer to attend Camberley Staff College. 1 Jul 1905 Ass/Dir Ops and  and staff duties, Dept Militia and Defence, Ottawa. 1908 Dir. of Mil. Trng. Regimental duty Jan 1911. CO B Bty RCHA Kingston. July 1915 CO B Bty France. March 1916 CO 8 Bde RCFA, Ypres Salient. Evening of 8 April 1917, inspecting guns at Berthonval Farm prior to Vimy bombardment, was struck in abdomen by enemy fire.Died of wounds three days later.
